Agents from the General Subdirectorate of Anti-Narcotics Information Analysis (SGAIA) of the National Civil Police (PNC), in coordination with the Guatemalan Army, located and eradicated this Thursday, June 11, an illicit coca leaf plantation in a forested area of the Santa Rosita hamlet, El Chal, Petén.
According to official information, during the operation 128 thousand coca leaf bushes that were in the growth and use phase were eradicated and incinerated. The authorities estimated that the plantation had an approximate valuation of Q3.2 million.
According to official sources, the action was carried out as part of the permanent operations against drug trafficking carried out by security forces in different regions of the country.
The Ministry of the Interior reported through its social networks that these actions seek to combat drug production and weaken criminal structures linked to drug trafficking.
He added that the participation of PNC anti-narcotics agents was essential for locating the plantation, while the Guatemalan Army provided support during the operations carried out in the area where the illegal cultivation was detected.
For its part, the Army indicated that the plantation was located during inter-institutional coordination with the PNC.
According to the military institution, the eradication of the bushes is part of the joint efforts carried out by the Government of Guatemala to combat drug trafficking and transnational organized crime.
The authorities did not report any arrests related to this discovery and reiterated that they will continue with surveillance, location and destruction of illicit crops in different parts of the national territory.
