Previous attempts to free ringleaders

According to the PNC, this seizure and the investigation related to the weapons located in zone 18 add to a series of investigations carried out during 2025 on an alleged plan to free leaders of Barrio 18.

The Police indicated that, after the transfer of several ringleaders from Fraijanes 2 to Renovación 1, on July 31, 2025, actions were detected that sought to facilitate an escape.

The investigations led to raids in Escuintla, where weapons, ammunition, grenades and other evidence were found that, according to the authorities, would be used to support prisoner escape.

Possible links between members of Barrio 18 and personnel of the Penitentiary System for the entry of weapons, cell phones and other prohibited objects were also documented.

On August 25, 2025, the PNC captured Édgar Rolando Contreras Velásquez, 42, and Mónica Contreras Barrutia, 49, at the Renovación 1 entrance. The couple was transporting rifle ammunition in the trunk of the vehicle and intended to take them to jail.

Contreras Velásquez, implicated in the death of Captain Byron Lima, and Contreras Barrutia, accused in a human trafficking case, are being investigated for their links with María Marta Castañeda Torres, current partner “el Lobo”.

The escape of Fraijanes 2

After these alerts, on October 12, 2025, the authorities confirmed the escape of 20 members of Barrio 18 from the Fraijanes 2 prison.

On that occasion, the Public Ministry (MP) reported that the inmates had escaped between October 8 and 11 and that there were indications of internal and external support to carry out the escape.

The MP’s investigations determined that the prison’s surveillance cameras were manipulated and that there were no tunnels or structural damage that would evidence a forced escape.
