The second week of the J100 Galileo University Cup concluded this Saturday with the crowning of Charles Minvielle and Sera Park in the men’s and women’s singles finals. The tournament brought together outstanding youth tennis players in the U18 category for two weeks and once again positioned Guatemala as the venue for high-level international competitions.
The men’s final had a marked Guatemalan role thanks to Ronaldo Cotom, who reached the final of a J100 tournament for the first time in his career. The national team reached the decisive duel after beating Brazilian Rafael Gama 6-1 and 6-3 in the semifinals, consolidating one of the best performances of his career in the youth circuit.
However, the title remained in the hands of the American Charles Minvielle. The American, who had just eliminated the top seed, the Turkish Samim Filliz, dominated the first set 6-1. Although Cotom reacted in the second set and reduced a deficit from 2-5 to 4-5, Minvielle remained solid in the decisive points to close the match 6-4 and win the championship.
In the women’s division, South Korean Sera Park defeated 14-year-old American Sofía Dvortsova 6-0, 6-3. Park dominated the first set with authority, but in the second he faced a reaction from his rival, who took a 3-1 lead. The Asian responded with a string of consecutive games to come back and seal the title, demonstrating firmness in key moments of the match.
A high level tournament
With the close of the second week, a new edition of the J100 Galileo University Cup officially ended, a tournament that once again positioned Guatemala as the venue for top-level international youth competitions.
The contest had the main sponsorship of Universidad Galileo and the co-sponsorship of Banrural, Herbalife and Zeppelin, in addition to the support of Tigo Sports, Prensa Libre, Radio Infinita and Música as allied media.
The performances of Ronaldo Cotom, finalist in the men’s branch, and the results obtained by other national tennis players throughout the two weeks reflected the sustained growth of Guatemalan tennis in the international youth circuit.
