A B-52 Stratofortress bomber accident occurred around 11:20 a.m. on Monday, June 15, in the Edwards Air Force Baselocated in the Mojave Desert, California, about 160 kilometers north of Los Angeles.
The United States Air Force confirmed that emergency teams immediately responded to the scene of the incident, while response and damage assessment efforts continue. Authorities have not released information about possible injuries or the causes of the accident.
The crash of the aircraft caused an explosion and fire that generated a dense column of black smoke visible from several kilometers away. Images broadcast by local media show emergency vehicles working on the runway, while the military base restricted operations to facilitate rescue and emergency response efforts.
Shortly after noon, the military installation announced the temporary closure of its airfield and the diversion of all aircraft that were scheduled to land at the base. In addition, it suspended passes for non-commercial visitors until further notice in order to concentrate all resources on emergency operations.

Last April, the Air Force reported that one of the B-52s assigned to a radar modernization program had arrived at Edwards for ground and flight testing as part of a project aimed at extending the operational life of these aircraft.

So far, US authorities have not released details about the circumstances that led to the accident. The condition of the aircraft’s occupants has also not been confirmed.
