The XXXV “Pat Shaw” In Memoriam International Olympic Wrestling Cup took place on June 5 and 6 at Erick Barrondo Park and brought together more than 400 athletes from 18 countries.
The results reflect the progress of national Olympic wrestling in the women’s freestyle, men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman modalities, according to the Guatemalan Wrestling Federation.
Among the national representatives, Sharon Makepeace, winner of a gold medal, and Esneider Ayala, champion in the U-15 category, stood out.
By categories, Guatemala obtained 16 medals in U-15: seven gold, four silver and five bronze; 23 in U-17: 11 gold, three silver and nine bronze; 22 in U-20: eight gold, nine silver and five bronze, and 10 in the senior division: one gold, five silver and four bronze.
The “Pat Shaw” In Memoriam Cup honors the memory of American coach William “Pat” Shaw, who introduced Olympic wrestling to Guatemala in 1947.
According to the Guatemalan Wrestling Federation, the tournament has established itself as a preparation platform for upcoming international commitments.
The performance will also allow the level of national athletes to be evaluated in the face of more demanding tournaments, such as the Central American and Caribbean Games and the qualifying cycle towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, the entity reported.
With this harvest, Guatemala reaffirms its growth in Olympic wrestling and its position as one of the most competitive countries in Central America in this discipline, according to the organizers.
