Theater is one of the pillars of the June 2026 Festival. In this framework, the work The weeping girl of Guatemala will take the public into this tragicomedy inspired by one of the most emblematic legends of national folklore.

The play will be presented at the Hugo Carrillo Chamber Theater, at the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center, and presents a story that, between secrets, violence and superstitions, follows Juana, who is besieged by apparitions of La Llorona.

According to the synopsis, the story shows a family marked by an apparent curse linked to La Llorona. As the plot delves deeper into the mystery, it explores how this myth continues to resonate today through family conflicts, collective memory, and social issues that are still present in society.

From the character of Juana, the story explores how, for some, the misfortunes that surround her seem to confirm the bad omens attributed to a supposed curse that begins to fall on her and on the child she is expecting. As the plot progresses, family secrets come to light.

The work questions whether La Llorona is really a cursed horror or if she is the specter that condenses the pain of all of humanity, shares Dáriel Pérez, theater director and actor.

According to Pérez, the proposal seeks to bring the public closer to this figure of oral tradition from different perspectives, combining elements of humor, drama and mystery, without losing the essence that has made La Llorona one of the most representative stories of the country’s oral tradition.
