For several summers, Pep Guardiola managed to convince Bernardo Silva to stay at the club. Manchester City, although this Wednesday Real Madrid made his signing official for two seasons.
The Spanish coach always considered him a pillar of his project and one of the most important players on the team. From his arrival in 2017 until a few months ago he announced that he would leave at the end of his contract in June, the Portuguese was one of the hallmarks of City’s successes. Irreplaceable, there is no other player like him on the market, and that is why the big clubs in Spain wanted him.
At 31 years old, Bernardo Silva has won everything. In more than 600 games, with 111 goals and 103 assists, he won six Premier Leagues, one Champions League and another dozen titles with the ‘Sky Blues’, where he is already a legend and a key piece of the club’s dominance in the last decade. It is difficult to understand Guardiola’s City without Bernardo’s engine in the midfield.
Over the years, carving out a place as the undisputed headline with Guardiola has been almost impossible, except for Silva, who always found space in the eleven. He played as a winger, midfielder, midfielder and even as a false ‘9’. He has occupied all areas of the field and always performed. At Real Madrid they still remember his performances in the Champions League qualifiers, where he seemed not to tire out even after 120 minutes.

Bernardo, who this Wednesday will compete in the 2026 World Cup with Portugal against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, could have opted for a more comfortable retirement or one last big contract in another destination, but chose to continue competing at the highest levell. That is why he stayed at City when Guardiola asked him to, and that is why now, as he closes a cycle in Manchester, he is betting on the Spanish League. His pace, creativity and physical display will be key in the reconstruction of Real Madrid.
In the white team he will assume a role closer to the one he had in his last seasons at City, as a complement in midfield. He will support the other players in that area, moving away from the winger he was in the beginning, to move freely throughout the center of the field, providing delivery, intensity and quality in the pass.

Age doesn’t seem to be a problem. Last season he played the 38 league games for City and has proven to be a very reliable player when it comes to injuries. Since his arrival in 2017, from Monaco for 50 million euros, he has missed less than a dozen games due to physical problems.
He maintains a close relationship with José Mourinho, and this signing also reinforces Real Madrid’s link with Jorge Mendes, its representative through Gestifute.
That Guardiola was emotional at his farewell Last May 24 at the Etihad it was no coincidence. As happened before with Sergio Agüero, Kevin De Bruyne or Vincent Kompany, City’s recent history is not understood without Bernardo Silva.
