Tremor of magnitude 5.1 shakes the Pacific and is sensitive in several areas of the country

An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 was recorded at 10:00 p.m. this Sunday off the Pacific coast of Guatemala, reported the Insivumeh Seismology Section. The movement occurred at a depth of 44.28 kilometers and its data are preliminary.

According to preliminary information, subject to change, the earthquake had its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, at coordinates 13,270 latitude and -90,939 longitude, at a depth of 44.28 kilometers.

The report indicates that the seismic event occurred at 10:00:23 p.m. and was detected by the Insivumeh monitoring systems. Until the time of the report’s issuance, no official reports on material damage or affected people had been released. It was sensitive in several regions of the country.

Guatemala is located in one of the regions with the highest seismic activity in Central America due to its location on the contact of the Caribbean, Cocos and North American tectonic plates. Furthermore, off the Pacific coast is located the Mesoamerican Trench, an area where telluric movements of different intensities are frequently generated.

Due to this geological condition, the country constantly registers earthquakes, some barely perceptible to the population and others with the capacity to cause damage to infrastructure, landslides and damage to vulnerable communities.

The authorities recommend remaining calm during an earthquake and applying the prevention measures established by civil protection agencies. Among the main recommendations are:

  • Identify evacuation routes and safe areas in homes, educational centers and workplaces.
  • Keep an emergency backpack ready with water, non-perishable food, flashlight, radio, batteries and essential medications.
  • Stay away from windows, falling objects, and unstable structures during movement.
  • Do not use elevators while an earthquake occurs.
  • Follow only information issued by official sources.
  • Check for possible structural damage before re-entering affected properties.
  • Be on the lookout for aftershocks after the main event.
