Mineduc doubles food scholarship for boarding school students and increases contribution to Q1,300

The students of four educational centers with boarding school they will receive double the resources for food expensesafter the Ministry of Education (Mineduc) approved the increase in these scholarships through Government Agreement 98-2026.

Since 2014, the profit was Q650 monthlybut starting this June 23 the amount will be Q1 thousand 300which will be delivered to cover the nine months of the school year.

The government agreement indicates that, due to the sustained increase in the cost of the basic basket, the initial amount was insufficient to meet the food needs of the students, so it was necessary to increase it to guarantee school permanence and the good academic performance of the beneficiaries.

The establishments that will receive the contribution are the Georg Kerschensteiner Industrial Technical Institute, Mazatenango, Suchitepéquez; the Eastern Regional Normal School, Monjas, Jalapa; the Pedro Molina Rural Normal School, La Alameda, Chimaltenango, and the Western Regional Normal School, Santa Lucía Utatlán, Sololá.

According to the Mineduc, the benefit will reach this year 1 thousand 120 young people who study in these establishments. Therefore, the portfolio will spend monthly Q1 million 456 thousand and, to cover the school year, will disburse Q13.1 million.

The amount to cover the scholarship will come from the ministry’s current budget, through a budget modification.

Beneficiaries

The payment of scholarships for food originated with Government Agreement 620-97, and the original amount was Q300which later became Q650 and now it has doubled.

It was created with the purpose of giving young people from the communities the opportunity to continue their studies in a boarding schoolso the distance from the educational center will no longer be a concern and they will focus on their academic preparation.

For example, the Georg Kerschensteiner Industrial Technical Institute, Mazatenango, Suchitepéquez, offers six degrees, including Industrial Bachelor and Expert in Welding for Industrial Processes and Structural Constructions, and Industrial Bachelor and Expert in Electricity. The establishment has a double day: in the morning the technical area is taught and in the afternoon the academic area is taught.
