The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office from the Public Ministry (MP) has received 17 complaints in different files against Walter Mazariegos, rector of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala (Usac), according to updated official information.

According to the MP, some of these complaints have been connected, that is, grouped within the same process because they are related to similar factswhich allows their processing in unified files.

The Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the investigations continue to develop and are still in the analysis phase.

In that sense, when asked about the crimes indicated in the files, she responded: “As they progress and the criminal process allows it, they will be informed,” without detailing for now the specific classifications or the specific facts investigated.

The MP added that the cases remain under active investigation, so no conclusions or final results have been issued about possible criminal responsibilities.

Complaints against Mazariegos

The complaints against Mazariegos They are framed in a scenario of accusations and questions about his re-election as rector of the USAC, a process that has been the subject of challenges, legal actions and disputes in the academic and political spheres.

In parallel, in recent congressional summonses, the Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC) has reported that it maintains open audits at the university and that from these they have derived three related criminal complaints with administrative decisions and internal processes of the institution.

In parallel to the criminal complaints, other judicial resolutions have been issued by the Constitutional Court (CC) for actions filed by another civil opposition organization that brought other actions in other instances.

On the other hand, at the beginning of June, the Constitutional Court (CC) signed resolutions related to appeals against suspensions of the election process for the rector of the USAC, which gave validity to the re-election of Walter Mazariegos. The files are related to amparos due to allegations of irregularities in the election of the April 8, 2026.

On June 22, the CC heard seven additional actions regarding the process; However, the cases were removed from the agenda. The challenges include appeals from the University Electoral Body and the Higher University Council (CSU), while the opposition points out that there are still pending appeals in different instances.

Relevance with upcoming election

The context of these investigations is also linked to the interest in formation of the nomination committee who will elect the next head of the Comptroller General of Accounts.

The presidency of the nominating commission for the election of the head of the Comptroller’s Office will be defined among the rectors of the 17 legally accredited universities in the country, in a process where at least six of them would be willing to support Mazariegos to head the commission in charge of conducting the selection, according to sources consulted.

The Comptroller General of Accounts has an impact as it is the institution in charge of issuing settlements, a requirement for participation in electoral processes, which has placed the issue at the center of the political and institutional debate around Mazariegos.
