Five alleged hitmen were captured this Tuesday, June 24, after an armed attack against the occupants of a pick-up truck in the Mario Alioto neighborhood, zone 4 of Villa Nueva, which left one man dead and another injured, reported the National Civil Police (PNC) and the relief forces.

The attack occurred near the sector known as Mayan Golf. Volunteer firefighters from the 25th Company located a deceased person inside a pick-up truck with plates P-528KBJ and helped another victim with gunshot wounds, who was transferred to the emergency of the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) 7-19.

The shots alerted PNC agents who were near the scene, which made it possible to locate and capture five alleged perpetrators, who tried to hide in an abandoned house after the attack, according to preliminary information.

One of the aspects that most caught the attention of the authorities is that one of the detainees has an amputated leg. The PNC reported on its social networks that the suspect has a criminal record and that, despite his physical condition, he allegedly continues to be involved in criminal activities.

Jorge Aguilar, spokesperson for the institution, indicated that one of the alleged attackers was wounded by a gunshot during the events and was transferred under police custody to a healthcare center.

Aguilar added that during the operation several firearms were seized and will be subjected to expert reports to determine if they were used in the attack.

According to the first investigations, the five detainees would be alleged members of the Mara Salvatrucha. The authorities continue with the proceedings to establish the motive for the crime and the specific participation of each of those captured.

The armed attack, the chase and the subsequent operation generated complications in vehicular traffic in the sector. Henry Quevedo, spokesman for the Villa Nueva Municipal Traffic Police, reported that the Public Ministry requested the closure of 11th Street, in front of a textile factory, to process the scene.

The pick-up truck was left at the scene with multiple bullet holes in the body and windows. In addition, investigators located numerous shell casings, evidence that will be analyzed as part of the investigation.

Prosecutors from the Public Ministry and PNC agents continue to collect evidence to clarify the armed attack and determine if the victims were the direct objective of the aggressors.
