A video circulating on social networks shows the sequence of events that occurred at the entrance to the Atlántida neighborhood, zone 18 of the capital, where a motorist ran over a couple who were riding a motorcycle.
The victims were identified as Kevin Alexander Jimenez Ambrociomotorcycle rider, and Nidia Renata Bautista Garcíawho was traveling as a companion.
In the images you can see a man dressed in a blue shirt and gray pants approaching a black car with damage to the front. Before boarding the vehicle, a leg can be seen under the car. The subject crouches, kneels and attempts to pull a person by the foot.
Seconds later, the man gets into the vehicle from the driver’s side. Immediately afterwards, the car reverses and passes over the occupants of the motorcycle, who remained lying on the asphalt.
While these events are happening, several people record the scene and one of them shouts: “Don’t let him go, girl, don’t let him go!”
The vehicle continues to reverse and begins to emit smoke. Several people try to stop the driver; However, he accelerates to leave the place.
“Careful, careful!”exclaim some of those present as they move away from the path of the car and observe the injured.
The National Civil Police (PNC) reported that agents arrested Jorge David Rodas Linaresdriver of the sedan car, identified as allegedly responsible for the incident that occurred this Sunday, June 28, after 10:00 p.m.
“Immediately, PNC agents neutralized and detained Jorge Rhodesdriver of the Honda brand car, P 551JSQ, alleged responsible for the incident, who has already been placed at the disposal of the corresponding courts to answer for his actions,” the institution indicated.
The entity assured that the case will be brought to justice.
“There will be no impunity for the flagrant irresponsibility that puts the lives of Guatemalans at risk,” the PNC stated.
The institution also condemned driving under the influence of alcohol.
Responsible driving
“The PNC strongly condemns the conduct of citizens who, under the influence of alcohol, decide to get behind the wheel. A vehicle in the hands of an irresponsible person becomes a lethal weapon,” he said.
The PNC indicated that the incident should not be considered a traffic accident. “Today’s case is not an accident, it is the direct result of an irresponsible decision,” he emphasized.
He reported that he will strengthen coordination with the Traffic Department of the National Civil Police and the Municipal Traffic Police to increase control and alcohol testing operations at strategic points in the capital city and the main routes in the country. He also called on the population to report drivers who represent a risk to road safety to number 110.
