NASA estimates with satellite images that almost 59 thousand buildings were damaged after the earthquakes in Venezuela

The Sentinel-1 satellite radar allowed NASA to estimate that about 58,870 buildings were damaged or destroyed in Venezuela after the double earthquake recorded on June 24.

The amount arises from the preliminary processing of satellite images that seek dimension the structural impact in the most affected areas. However, the US space agency clarified that this is initial information, subject to review.

The images were created with radar data from the Sentinel-1 satellite, which It is part of the European Copernicus Earth observation program. NASA highlighted that this is a “preliminary product prepared a few days after the event and has not yet been validated.”

The data “estimate that approximately 58,870 Buildings were likely damaged or destroyed throughout the affected region, according to the satellite’s latest pass. June 25, 2026“.

NASA’s Disaster Response Coordination System has been activated to provide support and is publishing additional maps and data products as they become available, the agency said on social media.

Experts analyzed two sets of data obtained using Sentinel-1 radar technology after the event in the affected region, explained NASA’s Earthdata Geographic Information System (EGIS).

The first set of data was obtained on June 24 and covers the western area, close to the epicenter, around San Felipe and Yumare.

The second corresponds to June 25 and includes the metropolitan area of Caracas, including Petare and Antímano.

Every image after the event was compared to a series of Sentinel-1 reference images from before the earthquakecaptured during the previous year. Later, both were merged into a single damage map.

The European Space Agency (ESA) also used data from Sentinel-1 to create maps, including one on the deformation of the terrain caused by the double earthquake, thanks to the satellite’s remote sensing instruments, which can detect differences with millimeter precision.

The map is an interferogram obtained by comparing Sentinel-1 data for two dates: June 18, before the earthquakes, and June 25, a day after.

The image shows the affected area, which extends from Caracas to Puerto Cabello, about 210 kilometers west of the capital.

Venezuela suffered the June 24 a double earthquake, with an epicenter near San Felipe and Yumare, in the center-north of the country, which caused strong shaking along the central coast and in the metropolitan area of Caracas. The main earthquake, magnitude 7.5was preceded by another of 7.2EGIS recalled.

Attempts to rescue survivors continue

Attempts to rescue people alive continue this June 30, when six days have passed since the double earthquake that has caused at least 1,719 deathsmainly due to the collapse of numerous buildings.

In the state of La Guaira, the epicenter of the devastation, rescuers from all over the world They work against time to search for survivors among the rubble, while the chances of finding people alive decrease as the hours go by.

Rescuers of United States, Portugal, Costa Rica, Chile and Mexico They continue with the work to rescue the guard of a residential building in Catia La Mar, who was trapped in the third level of the basement after the tremors.

The United Nations coordinates more than two thousand rescuers of 27 countries in the search for survivors under the rubble.

According to official figures, updated as of June 29, The death toll rises to 1,719 and the number of injured rises to 5,034.. The victims add up 15,866 and at least 855 buildings were affected, of which 189 They completely collapsed.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) stated that there is a “major food shortage, the collapse of basic services and an increase in protection risks for the displaced population.”
