The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, greeted this Saturday, July 4, and showed his support for the elected president of Peru, Keiko Fujimori.

“I greet the elected president of Peru and express my best wishes for this new challenge,” the president wrote on his X account.

“May the will for development and cooperation strengthen the ties of friendship between our peoples and open opportunities for the benefit of Guatemala and Peru,” Arévalo added.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala also expressed, in a statement, the “most sincere congratulations” to Fujimori, on behalf of the people and the Government of Guatemala, for the victory achieved on June 7.

The Guatemalan Foreign Ministry reiterated the Central American country’s willingness to strengthen the diplomatic ties that have prevailed for 169 years, as well as the interest in promoting common projects for the benefit of both nations.

Fujimori began the government transition stage on Friday with the appointment of economist Marco Vinelli as head of that process. Vinelli had been head of the government plan during the electoral campaign.

She did so with the argument of “responding to the country’s problems and starting to make decisions”, just hours after being proclaimed the winner of the presidential elections.

In a statement at the headquarters of his party, Fuerza Popular, Fujimori also announced the launch of the Presidency office, which will be headed by his second vice president, Miguel Torres, along with Vinelli.

“We are going to organize the transition team so that when we take office we know where to act first, how to respond quickly and responsibly,” said the elected president.

In that sense, Keiko Fujimori, daughter and political heir of former President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), pointed out that they must first know precisely the reality of the State they will receive and prepare a technical diagnosis, ministry by ministry, as well as the available resources and the most urgent challenges.

The right-wing Fujimori was declared officially elected president of Peru on Friday, when the official results of the second round of the presidential election were announced, in which she defeated the leftist Roberto Sánchez by a narrow margin of 49,641 votes.

The National Election Jury (JNE) of Peru, the country’s highest electoral authority, approved the results after Roberto Sánchez’s failed attempts to stop this act. The candidate denounced an alleged fraud against him and demanded the annulment of the vote abroad, a decision that would have given him victory as the candidate with the most votes in the national territory.
