After the success of The Minions (2015) and Despicable Me 4, the favorite yellow characters of cinema return with Minions & Monsters, a film that takes this group to enter the world of Hollywood.

Illumination expanded the universe of the saga with Minions & Monsters, in which the Minions conquer Hollywood after becoming movie stars. However, their adventure changes when they unleash monsters on the world, forcing them to band together to try to save the planet from the chaos they themselves caused, according to the synopsis.

The film Minions & Monsters was directed by Pierre Coffin, who also gives voice to the beloved characters. The script was written by Brian Lynch and Coffin himself. The film was recently released in movie theaters.

In an interview with Polygon, Pierre Coffin talked about the origin of the characters and revealed some details of their characteristics. The film incorporates various tribes of Minions into the narrative, a concept that, according to different media, could expand the cinematographic universe of the franchise, reported Infobae.

Within this concept, the character James is presented, who stops serving the villains and shows an artistic side that takes the Minions to Hollywood. Regarding this change, Coffin explained some traits of these characters.

Origin of the characters

Being all male, one of the unknowns about the Minions is how each of them came about. Coffin explained that the answer to his origin was already present in the first Minions movie.

The director pointed out that the opening credits begin with small yellow cells, an element that would be key to understanding its origin. He added that during the creative process they have sought to expand that background within the narrative universe, although that idea has not yet been fully developed.

During the interview, Coffin revealed that a proposal for the origin of the characters was explored that was ultimately not included in the final version of Minions & Monsters. The idea was that everything began with a Big Bang, from which small yellow dots emerged that would give rise to the Minions.

According to that proposal, these dots would travel from planet to planet in search of a home until they reached Earth, where they would eventually populate the planet. However, the idea was discarded as it was considered unrelated to the story that Minions & Monsters sought to tell.

“Maybe we will do it in another Minions movie in the future,” said the director when asked if one day the origin of these characters will be shown.

Furthermore, as highlighted by Infobae, Coffin assured that the Minions cannot die. He explained that during the development of the story they tried to raise that possibility, but the characters always reappear.
