With a view to the 2027 general electionsthe political offer continues to expand.
Currently there are 20 committees for the constitution of political partiesin addition to 25 political parties registered and two promoter groups registered with the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).
However, only four committees have already exceeded the minimum number of adherents that the law requires to advance in its constitution process.
According to the most recent data from the Citizen Registrythe committees Roots, XGuate, Chapín and Dignity they already exceed the 28 thousand 83 adherentsa figure equivalent to 0.30% of the electoral roll used in the 2023 general elections.
By meeting this requirement, these organizations can advance to the next phase of the process to establish themselves as political parties, with a view to competing in the 2027 elections.
In figures
Roots register 40 thousand 497 adherentsa figure higher than the register of affiliates of 23 of the 25 political parties currently enrolled.
Currently, the National Unit of Hope (UNE) maintains the largest membership list in the country, with 85 thousand 386 members, followed by Come onwith 41 thousand 322.
Both organizations are the only ones whose membership list exceeds the number of adherents of the Roots committee.
Even established organizations such as Cabal (35 thousand 30 members), Serve (32 thousand 533) and YOU (31 thousand 648) They have fewer members than those with more than 40 thousand Raíces adherents, according to official TSE statistics.
The other three committees that have already exceeded the goal are:
- XGuate: 32 thousand 72 adherents
- Chapín: 30 thousand 696 adherents
- Dignity: 29 thousand 474 adherents
The three organizations also have more members than the number of members of several current political parties.
Reaching the goal does not guarantee participation in 2027
However, overcoming the 28 thousand 83 adherents It does not mean that these committees are assured of their participation in the next elections.
According to the Electoral and Political Parties Law (LEPP)the membership requirement is just one of the stages to obtain definitive registration as a political party.
After reaching that figure, the committees must request authorization from the Citizen Registry for hold their assemblies, organize themselves territorially, integrate their management bodies and complete the constitution process.
Among the pending requirements are:
- Hold municipal and departmental assemblies
- Accredit permanent organization in at least 50 municipalities of 12 departments
- Integrate the National Executive Committee and other party bodies
- Obtain definitive registration as a political party before the Citizen Registry
Only after completing this procedure will they be able to proclaim candidates when the TSE officially calls the general elections.
Most committees remain below the requirement
Although four organizations have already reached the goal, the majority continue to lag behind.
Of the 22 registered committees, 18 still do not exceed the minimum number of adherents requested. Among them are We are Dignidad Guatemala (24 thousand 295), National Transformation (22 thousand 48), Our Freedom Party (19,492) and Chapín Unique Movement (18,823), inter alia.
Furthermore, the Together for Guate and Life committees They appear registered with the TSE, but in the most recent public list they still do not report adherents.
For these organizations, not reaching the minimum number before the legal deadline ends could prevent them from completing their constitution in time for the 2027 elections and force them to continue the process with an eye toward the next electoral period.
The legal requirement
The LEPP establishes in its article 19 that every political organization in the process of constitution must have adherents equivalent to 0.30% of the electoral roll used in the last general election.
Taking as reference the 9 million 361 thousand 68 registered citizens In the 2023 elections, the minimum required for this process amounts to 28,083 adherents.
Adhesion activities can be carried out from the conclusion of the last electoral process and up to 90 days before the next call for elections, scheduled for January 2027.
In practice, Organizations have until around October 2026 to complete this requirement and advance the necessary procedures to participate in the next elections.
political parties
The most recent statistics from the TSE show that 19 of the 25 current political parties They already exceed the minimum number of members required by law.
The six that remain below are:
- Guatemalan Green Party (27,918)
- Citizen Prosperity (27 thousand 321)
- Victory (26 thousand 812)
- Power (26 thousand 183)
- URNG-Corn (25 thousand 803)
- Winaq (25 thousand 302)
The LEPP establishes in the article 92 that failure to comply with legal requirements may result in the temporary suspension of party activities. However, it is up to the Registry of Citizens and the TSE to determine the measures applicable in each case.
