During his career, Free press has tried to give back to society, a little of its kind preference, with programs that seek to improve the quality of life of Guatemalans.
“The desire is to contribute to better training of spokespersons and for them to achieve personal improvement. In addition, to have better opportunities in the future,” said the president of Free press, Mrs. María Mercedes Girón de Blank, in her speech at the beginning of the 2018 school year.
In 2017, 26 high school graduates in Sciences and Letters graduated from this educational center, 25 finished basic education and 20 completed primary school. Additionally, as part of the integral development, those who wanted it, took the spiritual preparation to receive First Communion.
How did the project start?
“Many of the announcers face the daily problem of not being able to add or subtract. Furthermore, the announcer sings the news, but unfortunately does not read it,” expressed Girón de Blank in 1995, when the literacy program emergedwith the support of the National Committee for Literacy (Conalfa). It was planned in three phases and its main purpose was to contribute to the teaching and education of the people in charge of selling this newspaper.
The pioneers of the project were 40 speakers who attended two centers, one located in zone 1 and the other in zone 7 of this Capital, where for six months, they managed to pass the first grade of primary school.
“What is intended is that we form a school, in which little by little they complete the respective grades, until they achieve a higher educational level,” explained Professor Manuel Girón, who in that first phase was one of those in charge of the project.
Subsequently, The School of Speakers was inaugurated in February 2007 at 12 street 9-48 zone 1 of the Capital city, thanks to the enthusiasm and social sense of Mrs. María Mercedes Girón de Blank.
Children, adults and the elderly are among those who are literate, who upon completing complete primary school, in three years of study, receive a diploma endorsed by the Ministry of Education, which allows them to continue with their educational career. The first class of bachelor’s degrees in Sciences and Letters, graduated from the School of Speakers, graduated in November 2013.
In it cycle 2025, 10 students completed their high school studies in science and literature due to maturity. The graduation ceremony was held at the facilities of said school on November 7, 2025, where family members, teachers and school authorities Free press They celebrated the achievement of the new graduates.
