CSJ modernizes the registry of lawyers and creates an electronic platform for registrations and consultations

The Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) made official the creation of the Electronic Registry of Lawyerswith which it will replace the manual system used until now for the registration and control of legal professionals. The measure was established in the Agreement 22-2026published on July 20, 2026 in the Official Gazette.

According to the agreement, the modernization seeks to digitize the registry of lawyers, strengthen the updating and safeguarding of information, as well as adapt the system to current technologies, since the registry provided for in article 196 of the Judicial Branch Law continues to operate manually.

He Electronic Registry of Lawyers will have jurisdiction throughout the national territory and will continue to operate in the Registry of Inheritance Processesbased in Guatemala City.

The agency will be responsible for the registration of lawyers and the registration of their signatures and seals, in addition to guaranteeing the control, updating and safeguarding of the information.

Agreement details

The agreement establishes that the data contained in the physical books They will progressively migrate towards the electronic platform. Likewise, it provides that the system must guarantee the confidentiality of the information, with access restricted to authorized users using security credentials.

The database will include, among others, the name and surname of the professional, registration number, university and faculty of graduation, date of graduation, signature, seal, photograph, headquarters of the professional office, when applicable, and the electronic locker. Any modification of this data must be registered in the system.

Furthermore, the rule prohibits the use of abbreviations in the professional seal, except those that refer to the academic degree or the profession of the lawyer.

The agreement also empowers the CSJ to create regional headquarters of the Electronic Registry when the demand for the service requires it, in order to meet the increase in lawyers graduating from the country’s universities and professionals who join the practice of the profession.

Among other provisions, it authorizes the Electronic Registry of Lawyers to issue certifications and reports both in physical and electronic format, even through advanced electronic signature when conditions allow.

Likewise, in case of deterioration, loss or theft of the registered professional sealthe lawyer must file a complaint with the Public Ministry and comply with the established requirements to process his reinstatement.

The agreement also allows the Presidency of the Judicial Branch sign agreements with other institutions to share information contained in the Electronic Registry of Lawyers, provided that the protection and appropriate use of the data is guaranteed.

In addition, the Supreme Court of Justice may establish a fee for charging for remote consultations of registry information.
