The technical director of the Guatemala Under-20 National Team, Sebastián Bini, announced the official call for 21 players who will represent the country in the Concacaf U-20 Championshipwhich will be played in Mexico and will grant tickets for the next Fifa U-20 World Cup that they will play Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
The Blue and White will face one of the most important challenges in recent years with the hope of achieving a new World Cup qualification and once again placing Guatemala’s name among the best youth teams in the region. The national team will seek its third participation in a U-20 World Cup, after qualifying for Colombia 2011 and Argentina 2023.
For this competition, Bini opted for a base of footballers with whom he has worked in recent weeks in preparation concentrations and microcycles. The Argentine coach trusts that the group arrives in the best conditions to compete in a tournament that will bring together the main youth teams in the area.
However, the road to qualification will not be easy. Guatemala was placed in Group B, along with the host Mexico, Costa Rica and Antigua and Barbuda. The presence of teams with tradition in the category, such as Mexico and Costa Rica, will force the national team to show its best version since the beginning of the championship.
Despite the group’s difficulty, there is confidence in the Guatemalan camp to make an outstanding performance. The objective is to advance to the direct elimination phase and stay in the fight for one of the tickets for the U-20 World Cup. The team will try to repeat the tactical discipline and football level that allowed it to achieve outstanding performances in previous processes.
One of the players who generates the greatest expectations is forward Marvin Ávila, from the São Paulo FC from Brazil, who arrives as one of the main figures of the national team. The attacker already debuted with the Guatemalan Senior National Team, where he showed conditions that make him one of the main promises of national soccer. His international experience and offensive capacity will be key to the aspirations of the team led by Bini.
The fans place great hopes in this generation of soccer players, who will have the responsibility of defending the national colors and fighting for a classification that would represent a new achievement for Guatemalan soccer. With talent, commitment and ambition, Guatemala will seek to compete against the strongest rivals in the area and get closer to a U-20 World Cup again.
Competition format
The first two places in each group will qualify directly to the next round, while the two best third places will also advance to the knockout phase.
The quarterfinals will be played on August 4 and 5; the semifinals, on August 7, and the final, on August 9, when the Concacaf champion and the teams qualified for the U-20 World Cup will be announced.
