Chixoy Hydroelectric Plant, considered the most important work of the last governments, was inaugurated by the head of state, General Óscar Humberto Mejía Víctores, in a solemn ceremony in which commanders of military sections, civil authorities and the diplomatic corps accredited in the country were present.
The events took place in the power house of the hydroelectric plant, in Pueblo Viejo Quixtal, south of Alta Verapaz. Officially, it was said that the work has an approximate value of Q900 million and the turbines that are in operation will currently generate only what is necessary for local consumption, which amounts to about 60 megawatts.
General Sandoval Torres, when giving a historical account of the project, recalled that he was called to serve as intervening president of Inde, by the head of state, chaired by General Mejía Víctores.
He explained that the project’s adduction tunnel suffered problems due to collapses over a considerable extent, which required repairing it with a strong iron coating.

Details
The dam has a height of 130 m and a reservoir 50 kilometers long, a maximum width of 1.4 kilometers, with a volume of 500 million cubic meters of water.
“10 thousand tons of reinforcing steel and 200 thousand cubic meters of concrete were used. Chixoy was completed in June 1983. Construction officially began on April 21, 1977.
