Guatemala experienced a day of civic celebration due to the massive turnout at the voting centers, the president of the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE), graduate Arturo Herbruger Asturiaswho indicated that the number of voters exceeded 70% of registered citizens to elect 88 deputies to the National Constituent Assembly.
The day took place peacefully and without incident. In the first hours, thousands of people went to the voting tables. By midday, the number of voters had decreased and in the afternoon it was already extremely easy to vote.
“The people came en masse,” said the director of the Citizens Registry, Mr. Mario Guerra Roldán. “The large turnout of voters was a lie to the birds of ill omen, who predicted that there would be a large abstentionism,” he added.
political celebration
In most of the headquarters of the political parties that participated in the national constituent assembly elections, when the TSE had not yet announced the final result of the elections, there was a party.
The parties enlivened their meetings with mariachis and marimbistic groups. The vigil lasted all night and some of the coreligionists from the different entities remained waiting for the final results, which were delayed mainly due to the lack of a modern computer system in the departments.
The most voted
The Christian Democracy party achieved 326 thousand votes and 20 seats in the Assembly. Union of the National Center (UCN) achieved 326 thousand votes and 20 seats; The right-wing coalition National Liberation Movement and Central Authentic Nacionalista had 249 thousand votes and 23 seats. This National Constituent Assembly was responsible for drafting, discussing and approving the current Constitution of the Republic.
