Based on the novel by Guatemalan writer José Milla y Vidaurre, The story of a Pepe It will hit the theater stages of the Popular University (UP) in August 2026.

“It is an adaptation of a novel that has been a classic of Guatemalan literature. It has been hard work to bring a 300-page work to the theater that lasts two hours, which people don’t even feel,” explains Ingrid Mejía, cultural coordinator of the UP.

The story follows Gabriel Fernández, a young man raised in a wealthy family after being abandoned in his childhood, who discovers that his real father is a famous bandit. known as “Wool’s Foot”.

“Gabriel, since he was little, faces doubts about his origin and, in his youth, he joins the army and experiences loves that further complicate his existence, facing the revelation of his lineage and the decision about whether to follow the military path or accept his true identity as the son of the bandit,” the synopsis details.

Set in Guatemala in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the story explores themes such as love, mystery, the search for identity, and the social and political changes that come with the transition from colony to independence.

“The work not only narrates the personal story of the protagonist, but also functions as a mirror of colonial society in transition, highlighting the tensions and values of that historical moment,” the description adds.

The adaptation was made by René Estuardo Galdámez, who is also the director of the work. The cast includes eight actors:

  • Elizabeth Marroquin
  • Paul Cifuentes
  • Alejandro Araujo
  • Ivette Alvarado
  • Danny Aceituno
  • Brad Ventura
  • Victoria Lopez
  • Dalila Gonzalez
