The Municipality of Guatemala suspended the return of heavy transport on the overpass of Lomas del Norte, located in zone 17 capital, due to fissures detected in its structure.
The measure will enter into force on Friday, June 13, at 11.00, as part of the actions to mitigate risks in that road work. The commune reported that this is an additional preventive measure that adds to others already implemented, and whose objective is to protect the safety of neighbors.
The edile authorities indicated that these actions will be maintained while the Ministry of Communications performs the corresponding technical analysis, according to their competence.
“If you travel through the sector, be attentive to the signaling of the place and follow the instructions of the PMT agents,” recommends the commune.
Structural damage
Fissures of up to two inches wide have generated concern, as they have deepened recently. This happened when an internal wall of the work collapsed, causing a undercut that left one of the columns of the overpass.
The cracks are visible from the top of the structure and cross to the base. However, the damage is not new. Since 2018, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) warned, through a report, about the damage and risk that the work for neighbors and motorists represents.
In 2024, a new evaluation was carried out in which the structure “urgently” with mitigation measures was recommended, since it is a key route for the interconnection between Guatemala City and the north of the country. The risk persists, since through the pass they circulate daily between 100,000 and 125,000 vehicles, mainly of heavy transport to the borders with Mexico and Belize, as well as to Puerto Barrios, Izabal.
