Heavy rains impact four departments and leave consideration damage

The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) reports consideration damage in communities of four departments and declares alert to a low pressure system on the Pacific coast, which could become a tropical cyclone and cause more rains in the country.

The Conred reported floods in homes of Canton Las Rosas, Pueblo Nuevo, Suchitepéquez, where, after serving those affected, the cleaning of the area was coordinated.

In addition, there was a collapse in the San Francisco Pecul village, also in Pueblo Nuevo, Suchitepéquez.

It was reported that, due to the rains, several homes were flooded in the Jerez village, Nuevo San Carlos, Retalhuleu, where damage and needs were evaluated.

Land saturation caused a slip that affected a house in the Canguacha, Senahú, Alta Verapaz community.

In another emergency, the Conred coordinated cleaning works by a collapse at kilometer 190.5, at the entrance to El Palmar, Quetzaltenango.

In that same municipality, a house in the Belén canton, sector C, was flooded because of the rain.

Rains persist in the capital

Amílcar Montejo, communication director of Emetra, reported on his social networks that several sectors of the capital were affected by the rain.

“It rains intense between zones 1, 2, 3 and 6. On Martí street, the reversible lane is still enabled to expedite the demand of users to the route to the Atlantic,” Montejo added.

Damage count

During the rainy season 2025, 408 emergencies have been registered in the country from April 19 to date, according to Conred. These adverse climatic conditions have left more than 3,000 people affected and more than 600 victims.

The authorities maintain the registration of 16 people killed as a result of these weather events. In addition, more than 100 homes are at risk.

Juan Laureano, spokesman for the Conred, indicated that the most affected departments are Suchitepéquez, with 53 emergencies, followed by Guatemala, with 52 incidents. Quiché and Quetzaltenango also appear among the most impacted areas.

He added that, since the formal establishment of the rainy season 2025, the Conred system has intensified monitoring work to guarantee a rapid and effective response to future emergencies in different regions of the country.

They monitor low pressure system

The CONRED monitors a low pressure system on the Pacific coast, which has intensified until it becomes the 5E tropical cyclone potential. Although this meteorological phenomenon will not directly affect Guatemala, it will cause a significant income of moisture to the national territory.

Intense rains are foreseen, especially in the cross -section of the north, the valleys of the East and the regions of the south to the center of the country.

Given this panorama, the Conred system remains in a warning and preparation to effectively respond to any emergency derived from climatic conditions.

The Conred Executive Secretariat has issued the following recommendations:

  • Avoid crossing flooded rivers and flooded streets.
  • Activate the Conred system in case of emergency through calls to local authorities, relief bodies or directly to number 119.
  • Prepare an emergency family response plan.
  • Have the 72 -hour backpack ready with essential supplies.
