With devotion, solemnity and faith, the loaders hold on their shoulders the majestic processional courtships that cross the streets of the historic center. Between incense clouds, the sound of the funeral marches and the colorful carpets created by teachers of ephemeral artprocessions give life to the most significant religious expression of Guatemala.

In the middle of the penance and reflection time imposed Lentdevotees advance in their spiritual preparation towards Easter weekcommemorate the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Loading one becomes an act of delivery: a moment of deep introspection where the faith of the people is mixed with mysticism and where tradition preserves the religious and cultural legacy of generations.

The city of Guatemala, epicenter of this unique expression of faith, houses more than 30 processional tours in March, reaffirming its place as the heart of Lent in the country.

In this fourth week at least 10 processional tours and viacrucis will be held in honor of Jesus of Nazareth.

Friday, March 28

Solemn via penitential crucis

Touring the streets of the Gerona neighborhood, the Crucis Penitencial Crucis will be held this fourth Friday of Lent in Commemoration of Jesus of Indulgence.

Saturday, March 29

Children’s Procession of the Sanctuary of Mr. San José

For four consecutive hours, on the fourth Saturday of Lent – a date designated by the sanctuary -, chargant boys and girls carry the image of Jesus Nazareno de los Milagros and the Blessed Virgin of Dolores.

Its tour, which began in 2016, currently has more than 1,500 loaders and at least 600 charger girls. In addition, they are accompanied by a Roman Children’s Squad during the tour.

Place: 9 Avenue between 4 and 3 Street A, Zone 1

Procession of the Lord of Mercies

Via Crucis de Jesús Nazareno de la Guardia de Honor

With more than 12 hours of travel through the Historic Center, Devotos will take on shoulders to Jesús Nazareno de la Guardia de Honor this fourth Sunday of Lent.

With a route of more than 15 hours, Jesús Nazareno Redeemer of the world and Blessed Virgin will be taken from the 3rd capital zone to zone 1.
