Haiti has captured international attention after a human avalanche was recorded in the Citadel Laferrière, also known as Citadel Henri, where the panic left a tragedy of at least 25 deaths recorded so far and dozens of injured.
The incident, which took place in the north of the country, within the historical monument, is being investigated by local authorities, while videos of the previous moments begin to circulate. Videos of the previous moment are circulating through social networks, in which a crowd of people can be seen celebrating in the entrance area of the tourist place.
Media such as Le Nouvelliste highlight that the Civil Protection agency reported that the incident occurred in the middle of the crowd, because on April 11 there was an “exceptionally high number of people in the place, which generated intense human pressure that was difficult to control.”
Local media in Haiti highlight that in the middle of the crowd a brawl broke out between those seeking to enter the Laferrière Citadel and those in a hurry seeking to leave.
As a preliminary part of the event, it is highlighted that the panic among the attendees developed a stampede that caused the incident. The media Le Nouvelliste points out that the stampede caused cases of suffocation, trampling and loss of consciousness among visitors.
The Haitian Times highlights that the concentration of people occurred after a call started on social networks for the youth concentration called “Citadel Vibe 3.0”, an event promoted by various content creators who attracted the crowd to the fortress.
Haitian authorities affirm that said event exceeded the number of attendees compared to the capacity of the venue. Local media highlight that Civil Protection would be searching for several people who are still missing, while dozens have entered the Sacré-Cœur hospital in Milot.
A report from Le Nouvelliste highlights that, although preliminary figures determined at least 30 deaths from the human avalanche, the final data have established the death of at least 25 people and dozens of injuries in hospitals.
