The company, based in the Netherlands, reported in a statement that “suspicious activity” was detected by “unauthorized third parties”.
Booking.com noted that the cyberattack could have allowed hackers to access data such as names, addresses, emails, phone numbers and others.
However, the company indicated that the bank details, as accounts, were not compromised during the cyberattack.
Booking.com explained that it has recently detected the “suspicious activity in relation to several reservations“and that it acted “immediately” to contain the incident. In addition, it assured that the situation is “under control” and that customers who could have been affected have been informed.
The company indicated that, as a preventive measure, it has updated the numbers PINs linked to each user’s reservations to reinforce security.
In this sense, he stressed that he never requests credit card information by email, telephone, SMS or messaging applications such as WhatsApp does not ask to make payments outside the platform’s usual channels.
Booking.com has not specified how many customers have been affected by the incident, nor for how long the attackers were able to access the systems. nor the exact date on which unauthorized access to customer data occurred.
The company reported the incident to the data protection authority in the Netherlands, as required by regulations, and assured that will continue to strengthen its security measures to protect its users’ information.
