The Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) of the Judicial Branch supports Judge Marco Antonio Villeda and authorized him, in a plenary session, a new license, now for one year, to continue as head of the Ministry of the Interior.
On October 17, 2025, the Government of Guatemala reported that President Bernardo Arévalo appointed Villeda as Minister of the Interior, after the resignation of Francisco Jiménez.
He also reported on that occasion that the head of that portfolio has extensive experience and recognized experience in public service.
On the 22nd of the same month, the plenary session of CSJ magistrates granted Judge Villeda permission to assume the position in the Interior portfolio.
Villeda, cataloged by social groups and the international community as an “anti-corruption judge,” came to the Interior after a security crisis derived from the escape of at least 20 inmates from the Fraijanes 2 prison.
The official holds a position in the Eighth Sentencing Court, to which he was transferred by order of the CSJ from the Asset Forfeiture Court.
