Alberto González and Viviana Aroche were crowned this Saturday champions of the Guatemala City 10K night race, organized by the Municipality of Guatemala. González crossed the finish line with a time of 00.29.31, while Aroche did so in 00.33.18. The event started at 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Center and ran through some of the main arteries of the capital, with thousands of registered runners who filled the streets with energy and color in a day dedicated to Guatemalan athletics.
In the men’s category, José Carlos González (00.29.56) and Williams Julajuj Solares (00.30.19) completed the podium. In women, Sahily Diago Mesa (00.34.48) and Heidy Alicia Villegas Marroquín (00.35.02) finished in second and third position, respectively.
The tour started from 7th Avenue, passed in front of the National Palace of Culture and continued along 6th Avenue, in front of the Portal de la Sexta. The participants passed by the Torre del Reformador and the Plazuela España before heading back, on a route that forced the authorities to implement road closures and detours in different sectors of the Historic Center during the event.
Prior to the start of the race, PMT agents removed runners who did not have an official number from some areas of the route, with the aim of maintaining order and control in the streets during the activity. Despite this, participation was massive, with thousands of athletes of different ages and levels taking to the streets of the capital.
The best in Guatemalan athletics
At the end of the competition, Viviana Aroche highlighted her performance after crossing the finish line in first place and establishing herself as one of the main figures in national athletics. “The goal will always be to break records, and thank God it is happening to me,” expressed the runner, who has maintained a constant evolution in her marks and results in different competitions on the local and international calendar.
For his part, Alberto González celebrated the victory after imposing his pace in the test and reaffirming his status as a benchmark in long-distance races in Guatemala. “Very happy to win the race; now I have my eyes on the Cobán Half Marathon and the Central American and Caribbean Games,” He stated, detailing his next goals in a season in which he seeks to continue adding wins and improve his times.
The 10K night race of the Municipality of Guatemala has established itself as one of the most important sporting events on the capital’s athletic calendar, bringing together elite and amateur runners each year.
