Forward Guillermo Martínez, from Pumas UNAM, is the main novelty on the list of 12 players of the Liga MX that will represent Mexico in the next World Cup, announced this Tuesday the Mexican Football Federation (FMF).
In a statement, the FMF confirmed the group, made up of two goalkeepers, two defenders, five midfielders and three forwards, who will gather in Mexico City starting on May 6 to begin the final stage of preparation.
Martínez, who has five goals in the Clausura tournament, appears as an option in the attack at a time when coach Javier Aguirre maintains doubts about the physical condition of several forwards, especially Santiago Giménez, from AC Milan, who has had few minutes after recovering from an injury.
In addition to the 12 summoned, Aguirre included eight young players as part of the process, who will accompany the group as support, although without the possibility of making up the final roster for the World Cup.
This group is made up of goalkeeper Óscar García (León); defenders Luis Rey (Puebla), Eduardo Águila (San Luis), Jesús Gómez (Tijuana) and Denzell García (Juárez FC); midfielders Iker Fimbres (Monterrey) and Jairo Torres (Juárez FC); and forward Kevin Castañeda (Tijuana).
The final call will be completed no later than June 1 with the players who are active abroad, mostly in Europe.
Barring surprises, the presence of players such as forward Raúl Jiménez, from Fulham, defender Johan Vásquez, from Genoa, and goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, from Limassol in Cyprus, who could play in his sixth World Cup, is expected.
The main absence in this call is that of midfielder Marcel Ruiz, from Toluca, who was aiming to start, but suffered a serious knee injury that puts his recovery in time in doubt.
Before the World Cup, the Mexican team will play three friendly matches: against Ghana on May 22, Australia on the 30th and Serbia on June 4. Mexico will be part of group A, where they will face South Africa on June 11, Korea on the 18th and the Czech Republic on the 24th.
On the two occasions that Mexico has hosted the World Cup, it managed to advance to the quarterfinals, a goal that the team led by Aguirre will seek to equal or surpass.
