Miss Bolivia, for its part, is the stage name of María Paz Ferreyra, a renowned Argentine singer, songwriter and DJ who has conquered her fans due to the mixture of urban and Latin rhythms such as cumbia, rap, reggae and the dancehall.
On many occasions, The depth of her texts reflects the training she had as a psychologist before focusing on music.which has been classified by experts as a “fusion bomb.”
According to Rebeca Lane, her vision is similar to that of Miss Bolivia, because her lyrics usually address themes of protest, feminism, defense of human rights and environmental awareness. Besides, Both have incendiary lyrics and a strong social commitment.
During a recent interview with Free pressLane shared details of the concert he will offer with Miss Bolivia in the country, its production and the song that united them.
“I remember it was in December 2013 when we met. She was on tour in Mexico and her team contacted me. I attended and organized a date at a venue in the capital,” Rebeca said.
Regarding that presentation that was close to Christmas, the Guatemalan artist highlights the connection and the work that arose with the Argentine artist.
“It was a complicated date (December 20), but Miss Bolivia traveled with the Mexican singer Ali Gua Gua and they stayed at my house. During that meeting, more than the concert, which was great, a brainstorm arose and at that time we wrote and recorded Free, daring and crazy, the song that has accompanied us for more than 12 yearsLane added.
Other connections
The concert that Rebeca Lane and Miss Bolivia will offer will not be the first and probably will not be the last, because the artists have created a connection that has allowed them to merge styles in different cultural venues and in several countries.
The Guatemalan artist recalled that, after their meeting in December 2013, they have taken their vision to other borders and their music has been heard at concerts, festivals and other international events.
“We haven’t shared as much as we would like, but the times we have done it have been special. There was one occasion when we were both in Mérida, Mexico, I attended his concert, he invited me to the stage and we sang Free, daring and crazy. Then I traveled to Argentina twice and she came to see me at the concerts. So the years have passed and at another time we met at a concert in Madrid, Spain, but we didn’t have time to coordinate to perform our song,” said Rebeca.
For the Guatemalan artist it has been essential to produce her own events or be very close to them. She is currently promoting a small tour with the Argentine artist that began on March 5 in Mexico City, will continue in Guatemala City and will end in San Salvador, El Salvador.
“It is difficult to create the ideal spaces to project our music and even more so when it is done independently, although I am grateful to those who have supported us and follow us. Therefore, at the concert in Guatemala City we will do something special, with our energy, lyrics, rhythm and vision,” Lane added.
His link with music
Although her experience as a sociologist has allowed her to acquire knowledge, a human approach and make closely visible various realities of the country and the world, Rebeca Lane found in music a world of expression, freedom and a tool to make important themes visible with her vision.
The Guatemalan artist indicated that, when she began to write her songs, she did not think about people because she did not have fans and that her music came from the need to tell her story and where she came from.
“When I started making music, it coincided a lot with the desire to tell who I was. I came from many spaces of social struggle, artistic spaces in which I always had a reflection: if I am a woman, it is different,” added Rebeca, who little by little has promoted her lyrics, rhythms and has given visibility to women.
“At that moment I had not fully understood feminism, but I had understood that, being a woman, I was different. So I think that the arrival of feminism for me was like being able to give an explanation to all the different violence that I had experienced in different spaces throughout my life, and understand why things happened… For example, I was in many spaces of activism as well, of social struggle, in which there were very few women and the women were there, in some way, like we had to shout to be heard,” he indicated.
“There are people who have studied that these types of violence occur in these different spaces and are manifested in these different ways, and they are not isolated experiences that each of us has had to live through, but they have an explanation, because the system is organized in this way. So, When I started singing, when I found the power to express myself through rap, just as the first things I needed to express were what I had experienced. And at that time, feminist music did not exist in the country, or at least not so much,” Rebeca added.
The Guatemalan artist began professionally in music in 2012 and after more than a decade on the scene, she continues to be committed to the fight for women’s rights to a dignified life.
“In other countries there were already several movements. Now in Guatemala it already exists and is well established, but that did not exist when I started singing. Although many of us are told that we are pioneers, the truth is that, when some of us started singing, we did it to tell our story,” she indicated.
According to Rebeca Lane, the concert she will offer with Miss Bolivia will be full of energy because the Argentine artist is characterized by mixing the power of a DJ set with the strength of her vocal performance.
“It is very natural that these mergers happen because we both share that spirit of “artivism” (art + activism) that seeks to make the system uncomfortable while we make everyone dance”, he concluded.
