Roberto Hernández stars in one of the most striking turns of the season in Guatemalan soccer. The Mexican coach was dismissed from Communications after 12 days of Apertura 2025 with the team in the last places, and just one tournament later he closed the regular phase as leader of Clausura 2026 at the head of Xelajú MC with 39 points.
The story with Communications was difficult. In 12 games with the Cremas, Hernández only achieved three victories before being dismissed, leaving interim coach Iván Franco Sopegno with a team poorly on track in the last places of the table, a situation that ended with the club in last place in the Apertura 2025 with 20 points and fighting to avoid relegation.
In Xelajú the panorama was completely different. Hernández took a team that was strong in competition thanks to Amarini Villatoro and kept it in the fight for leadership throughout Clausura 2026. “I see myself in the final from the first day I sat here. I want to give this team another moon”stated the Mexican coach after consolidating his lead on Sunday at the end of the match against Cobán Imperial in the Clausura 2026 tournament.

A league with history to write
In the quarterfinals, Xelajú MC will face Marquense at the Mario Camposeco Stadium with the advantage of playing all their games at home as leader of the Clausura. If the Superchivos advance to the semifinals, they could face Comunicaciones or Antigua GFC, which would make the duel one of the most attractive in the league due to the recent history that unites and separates Roberto Hernández with both clubs.
Xelajú also enters the league with the significant loss of its starting goalkeeper Rubén Darío Silva, who suffered a rupture of his Achilles tendon on the last day and will be out for six to eight months. Despite this, Hernández arrives with the confidence of a coach who knows Guatemalan soccer well and who has his best ally in Mario Camposeco to seek Xelajú’s eighth moon, which would place the Superchivos as one of the most successful teams in the National League.
