The president of the United States, Donald Trump, accepted on April 28 that the speech given by King Charles III before the US Congress, commemorating 250 years of independence, was “magnificent”, and even went so far as to say that it “made him a little envious.”
The president, during the state dinner at the White House, also said that the British monarch achieved what he has never been able to: make the Democrats present stand up to applaud him.
“I couldn’t believe it, I’ve never been able to do that,” Trump told the king during dinner, referring to how Charles III’s speech caused great admiration among both Republicans and Democrats.
During dinner, the British monarch paid tribute to Trump and the first lady, Melania, whom he highlighted for their “courage and firmness.”
He also recognized the members of the Secret Service who participated in the evacuation of the president after an alleged assassination attempt on April 25 in Washington.
Trump spoke briefly about the war in Iran and said the king “completely agrees with him.”
Later, the king joked about various topics, such as when he said that just as Trump stated some time ago that if it were not for the United States, they would speak German in England.
“If it weren’t for us, you would speak French,” a comment that was received with laughter from the guests, mostly cabinet members and businessmen.
Earlier, in his speech before Congress, the king stressed that both countries share “a history of reconciliation, renewal and an extraordinary partnership”, during a speech that is the first given by a British monarch since that of Elizabeth II in 1991.
