Guastatoya lost 0-1 to Municipal this Thursday at the David Cordón Hichos Stadium in the first leg of the Clausura 2026 quarterfinals, in a match that not only left the Pecho Amarillo team at a disadvantage in the series but was also marked by incidents off the field.

The game started with Guastatoya being the most active team in the first minutes, putting pressure on Municipal’s exits and creating danger on the wings, but Mario Acevedo’s Reds were ordering the game as the minutes passed until they dominated the match in the second half.

The only goal of the game came in the 72nd minute when José Mena took advantage of a poor mark by Guastatoya’s defense on a free kick to finish and make it 0-1, giving Municipal the advantage. The Yellow Chest tried to react but could not find clarity in the rival area, while the Reds managed the advantage intelligently until the final minutes when the game heated up.

At minute 85, Municipal player Aubrey David was hit by a can thrown from the local fans, which sparked a fight between the players at minute 86, leading to the expulsion of José Morales from Municipal and Rubén Escobar from Guastatoya in minute 88.

The context of the match was marked before the opening whistle by the surprise resignation of coach Pablo Centrone, confirmed just hours before the match by the president of the institution. Guastatoya faced this match without his usual helmsman at the most important moment of the season, with Luis Pedro Molina assuming command of the bench in an unprecedented situation for the El Progreso club.

The mission in El Trébol

With 0-1 down, Guastatoya must win at the Manuel Felipe Carrera El Trébol Stadium on Sunday, May 3 at 4:30 PM to advance to the semifinals. The task will not be easy since in addition to facing Municipal on their field, the Yellow Chest will have to do so without a confirmed coach after Centrone’s resignation and with the obligation to score at least two goals to overcome the overall score and avoid the tiebreaker criterion that favors Municipal by position in the classification table.

The tiebreaker criteria favors Municipal if they equal the overall score, since the Reds finished better positioned in the Clausura table with 38 points compared to Guastatoya’s 31. This means that Pecho Amarillo needs to win no matter what at El Trébol to advance, while Municipal can qualify with a draw or even a loss by one goal difference in their own stadium.
