The Nomination Commission for Attorney General and Head of the Public Ministry (MP) did not receive challenges against the list of candidates delivered to the President of the Republic, at the end of the established period.
With the closing of the objection period, at 3:30 p.m. this Monday, May 4, the appointment of the new attorney general remains in the hands of President Bernardo Arévalo, who must choose between six candidates included in the final list.
The candidates are the lawyers Julio César Rivera Clavería, Néctor Guilebaldo de León, Beyla Estrada Barrientos, Gabriel Estuardo García Luna, Carlos Alberto García Alvarado and César Augusto Ávila Aparicio.
Although the president has not announced the date of the appointment – which must be made before May 17 – he indicated this Monday, at a press conference, that he was waiting for the end of the challenge period to continue with the process.
Arévalo pointed out that the election responds to his constitutional obligation and the need to appoint a person with an upright profile, committed to democracy and opposed to corruption.
“It is in a critical process and requires leadership to rescue it to strengthen itself and respond to the expectations and demands of citizens,” said the president when referring to the situation of the MP.
The new attorney general will replace Consuelo Porras, who is serving two administrations at the head of the institution. Her management has been questioned, and both she and the MP leadership have been sanctioned by the United States and the European Union for allegations of corruption and actions that, according to these bodies, weaken democracy in Guatemala.
