This Monday, May 4, the Public Ministry (MP) carried out an exhumation process of 13 bodies in Nahualá, Sololá, related to a violent event that occurred on December 13, 2025 in a mountainous area of that town.

According to the authorities, the proceedings are being carried out because, after the incident, the population did not allow the bodies to be transferred to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) for the corresponding autopsies to be performed.

According to preliminary versions, a group of men and young people who were extracting lime were attacked by people dressed similarly to the Army. As a result of the incident, 13 people died.

Neighbors in the area and a police report indicated at the time that the deaths were caused by members of the Army. However, days later, the Government rejected that version and stated that the police document was written under threats from residents.

The authorities have also pointed out another hypothesis: that the victims had previously attacked a military detachment, which led to the confrontation. However, this point remains under investigation.

The territorial conflict between Nahualá and Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán, both municipalities in the department of Sololá, has been pointed out as the context in which this violent event occurred. These communities have had a dispute over territorial boundaries for years that has generated multiple armed incidents.

To carry out the exhumations, a contingent of the National Civil Police has been deployed, as well as personnel from the Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office, the Peace Court and the Public Criminal Defense, with the aim of guaranteeing the development of the procedure and following up on the case.

Authorities have not provided further details about the preliminary findings or the progress of the investigations. It is expected that forensic analyzes will allow the causes of death to be established with greater precision and contribute to clarifying the facts.
