Arévalo appoints Gabriel Estuardo García Luna as attorney general who will take office on May 17

President Bernardo Arévalo appointed this Tuesday, May 5, Gabriel Estuardo García Luna as attorney general and head of the Public Ministry (MP), who, as of May 17, will replace María Consuelo Porras Argueta in the position.

García Luna’s appointment occurred after an application process marked by legal actions arising from disagreements over the exclusion and inclusion of certain applicants.

The president chose the new prosecutor from a list of candidates also made up of Julio César Rivera Clavería, Néctor Guilebaldo de León, Beyla Estrada Barrientos, Carlos Alberto García Alvarado and César Augusto Ávila Aparicio, who were selected by the nomination commission.

Before Arévalo announced his decision, the president said at a press conference that the MP “is in a critical process and requires leadership to rescue it to strengthen itself and respond to the expectations and demands of citizens.”

Furthermore, he emphasized that the new attorney general will not respond to the interests of the Executive.

“The person who will be in charge of the Public Ministry is not at the service of the president or the Government, but rather serves the nation,” he assured.

The president added that the new head of the MP must make a difference in the leadership of the institution and contribute to a new stage in the country’s justice.

García Luna will replace, as of May 17, the current attorney general, Consuelo Porras Argueta, in office since 2018 and who has been sanctioned for corruption by the United States and the European Union.
