The recent rumblings reported in different sectors of the capital once again generated concern among neighbors, although so far the authorities have only confirmed a formal notice from Chinautla and they ruled out new subsequent reports related to the phenomenon.
On social networks, users indicated that they had heard sounds or vibrations in zones 2 and 6 of the capitalas well as in sectors of Chinautla and the zone 11 of Mixco during the afternoon of this Sunday, May 10.
In this regard, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) reported that the only report received corresponded to the Santa Marta II colonyin Chinautlawhere neighbors warned about a rumble perceived by several residents.
According to the institution, after the notice, communication was established with the local municipal liaison to verify the situation in the area; However, subsequently no more reports or new sounds were recorded.
“Personnel from the CONRED Executive Secretariat contacted the municipal liaison after that rumble, Monitoring was carried out in the area, but the neighbors did not notice any more and no more reports have been received.“, indicated the entity.
Coincidentally, the Seismological Service of Guatemala (SSG) confirmed that this Sunday they occurred two low magnitude earthquakes precisely in Chinautla, both shallow and with similar characteristics.
The first was from magnitude 2.8 and occurred at 2:25 p.m.located at 3.4 kilometers from the municipal seat of Chinautla and with a depth of 4 kilometers.
Later, at 2:53 p.m.a second movement of magnitude 2.7, just 1 kilometer from the municipal seat and with a depth of 3 kilometers.
Despite this, none of the events were classified as sensitive by the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh).
So far none of the institutions has associated or correlated the two earthquakes with the report of the rumblings.
The institution reported that in the last 24 hours, 28 earthquakes in the country and so far in 2026 there have already been 2,588 seismic events.

Similar rumblings had already been investigated
Reports of rumblings or noises perceived in areas of the capital and nearby municipalities are not new. In previous years, neighbors from different sectors of the department of Guatemala also warned about similar sounds that even felt like small vibrations.
One of the most notable episodes occurred between January and February 2022when multiple reports emerged from areas of the capital, Mixco, Villa Nueva and nearby municipalities.
After several weeks of analysis, Insivumeh and the Seismological Service of Guatemala concluded that the sounds had a “sound-volcanic” originassociated mainly with moderate explosions of the Fuego Volcano and not with significant tectonic or seismic activity.
The authorities explained at that time that the acoustic waves produced by volcanic explosions could propagate over long distances depending on atmospheric factors, wind direction and environmental conditions, allowing the rumblings to be perceived even in the metropolitan area.
The studies included analysis of seismic and acoustic sensors, as well as signal triangulation to determine the origin of the sounds.
In subsequent reports, especially during periods of increased activity at the Fuego Volcano, Conred and Insivumeh reiterated that this type of rumbling can be perceived again in different regions of the country without necessarily representing an immediate risk to the population.
Observed area
Until August 2022, Conred had identified nearly 10 thousand risk points throughout the country, both due to threats of flooding and landslides and landslides.
Chinautla, in addition, is among the areas with different geological threats and structural vulnerability, a situation evidenced by history of landslides and floods recorded in recent years.
According to Conred data, the municipality is part of metropolitan sectors susceptible to landslides, along with areas of the capital and municipalities such as Villa Nueva and Santa Catarina Pinula, especially during the rainy season.
