Quetzaltenango dressed up as a party since the afternoon of Saturday, May 17. Hundreds of super-chivo fans gathered in the El Calvario neighborhood of zone 1 and in different parts of the Quetzaltecan city to follow the first leg final of Clausura 2026 between Xelajú MC and Municipal played in El Trébol on giant screens.

The fans once again demonstrated why they are considered one of the most faithful and numerous in Guatemalan soccer. Entire families, groups of friends and supporters dressed in blue and red filled the streets with chants, flags and an atmosphere of excitement to achieve a positive result as visitors.

The euphoria exploded in the 9th minute when Raúl Calderón put Xelajú ahead on the scoreboard. The hugs, shouts and celebrations multiplied in every corner where there was a screen, while the fans dreamed of hitting the first blow in the final against Municipal.

However, the atmosphere changed as the minutes passed. Municipal tied quickly and the expulsion of Jorge Aparicio in the 67th minute ended up hitting the spirit of a fan who, despite the 4-1 defeat at El Trébol, still maintains hope for a historic comeback at the Mario Camposeco.

Municipal’s third goal, scored by Alejandro Cabeza in the 81st minute, began to completely change the atmosphere in Quetzaltenango. The faces of excitement gave way to silence and concern among the fans who followed the game on giant screens in different parts of the Quetzaltecan city.

Pedro Altán’s score in the 89th minute ended up being the hardest blow of the night for the super-chiva fans. The 4-1 score left Xelajú forced to look for a historic comeback at the Mario Camposeco stadium to keep the dream of the Clausura 2026 title alive.

Despite the adverse result, many fans remained in the streets and continued cheering on the team at the end of the match. The hope of a reaction at home is still present among fans accustomed to accompanying the Superchivos in the most difficult moments.

Hours after the game, Xelajú MC published the message “I choose to believe” on his social networks, a phrase that was quickly shared by hundreds of followers. For the Altense fans, while there are 90 minutes left to play at the Mario Camposeco, the series is still not completely defined.
