Tension took over the La Beaujoire Stadium during the match between Nantes and Toulouse on the last day of Ligue 1. The atmosphere got out of control after ultras from the local team began throwing flares and objects onto the field after the French club’s relegation was consummated.
The situation escalated quickly in the 20th minute when several masked fans invaded the pitch in protest against Nantes players and officials. Players from both teams had to move away towards the center of the field while stadium security tried to contain the chaos.
The security elements were overwhelmed by the number of ultras who entered the field amid scenes of violence and tension. Players, coaching staff and stadium staff ran to the locker rooms while referee Stéphanie Frappart decided to permanently suspend the match.
In the midst of the chaos, Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodzic personally tried to calm his team’s fans, although he was unable to stop the invasion. The images of the coach facing the crowd quickly went viral and provoked reactions of condemnation in European football.

The French Football Federation must rule in the coming days on possible sanctions against Nantes, which could include financial fines and the temporary closure of the La Beaujoire stadium after the disturbances during the match against Toulouse.
