Between suspense and action, and with a story that captivated the public, Stranger Things It became a phenomenon that aroused nostalgia in adults and immersed the youngest in mystery. However, before achieving success, the Duffer brothers revealed that the project was rejected several times and how certain decisions helped boost its popularity.

The series, which for almost 10 years kept the public waiting for the development of the story in Hawkins and the way in which the gang fought against Vecna, became a success for Netflix. This led the platform to think about expanding the universe with Stranger Things: stories from ’85 and other projects that are expected to be developed in the coming years.

During his participation in the podcast Happy Sad ConfusedMatt and Ross Duffer noted that the project was rejected at least 11 times and discussed casting decisions, primarily the addition of Winona Ryder.

According to the Duffer brothers’ story, large networks and production companies refused to join the project, since they were seeking not only to bring the story to the screen, but also to direct it. One of the strongest rejections, they confessed, was that of FX, as they assured that after that rejection they felt that they were lost.

Ross Duffer highlighted that, in seeking to bring the project to the screen, they approached a production company that asked them to see works previously directed by them. However, after watching their films, the production company rejected letting them both direct the series.

The Duffer brothers highlighted that the mixture of child protagonists with cinematographic concepts in the style of Stephen King and Steven Spielberg was not understood by those who rejected the idea.

Decisions that marked the series

Part of the success of the series derives from the cast made up of the Duffer brothers, since, as highlighted Infobaethe addition of Winona Ryder and David Harbor marked the project, as each actor brought the story to life.

They had a meeting with Winona Ryder in which she expressed her concerns about remaining in a television project for several years, since she had not participated in a series of that magnitude. Despite this, they convinced her to be part of five seasons, a decision that the directors considered a success.

For the role of Hopper, they explained that they initially looked for Billy Crudup, who was the first choice to play the character. However, after his refusal, the director of casting He pointed out David Harbor’s compatibility with the role, which convinced them with just one take.

The ending was another of the decisions that the Duffer brothers highlighted, as they assured that it was prepared in a detailed and careful way, and that it marked the real farewell of the cast of their characters, their companions and the project.

Matt Duffer added that scenes like the farewell between Hopper and Eleven before the final season closed marked an evolving narrative, while the end of Eleven’s character was left open to interpretation.

Future Stranger Things projects

The franchise continues to expand after the premiere of the animated series Stranger Things: stories from ’85. The Duffer brothers work on projects like a spin-off which, although it is still in an early phase, seeks to develop in a different and innovative way, without being perceived as a copy of the original series.

Likewise, they revealed that they are working on a film project based on an original idea.
