Why Trump has announced the deployment of 5,000 US troops to Poland

This May 21, US President Donald Trump announced the deployment of five thousand soldiers to Polandafter canceling said shipment to that country a week ago, amid the tensions that the president has had with NATO allies due to the war in Iran.

In a message posted on his Truth Social network, Donald Trump said that the decision to send troops to Poland was in honor of the Polish president, Karol Nawrocki, who is considered close to the Republican president.

“Based on the successful election of the current President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, whom I had the honor to support, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will send five thousand additional troops to Poland“Trump stated.

Trump’s recent announcement contradicts the position he had a few weeks ago, when he stated that he would reduce US troops in European bases.

This turned out to be a retaliation by the president against the NATO allies, due to their refusal to get militarily involved in the war in Iran and the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz.

Additionally, on May 12, Vice President JD Vance had denied that the US was going to reduce troops in Poland and stated that it was a “delay”.

Trump’s announcement coincides with the meeting this Thursday and Friday of NATO foreign ministers in Sweden, marked by the increase in European military spending and the reduction of US troops in the Old Continent.

Before taking off for Sweden, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared to the press that Trump is “disappointed” and “very upset” by the position of the allies, including Spain, in relation to the war in Iran.

“NATO is good for the United States because it provides us with bases in the region that allow us to project power in the event of a contingency in the Middle East and other places. If member countries like Spain deny us the use of these basesWhy are we still in NATO? We have to talk about that,” said the head of US diplomacy.
