A new proposal from Donald Trump’s government would increase fines against some immigrants who fail to comply up to US$18,000. deportation orders and are arrested by immigration authorities.
The proposal, prepared by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS, in English), would consist of increasing fines against migrants from US$5,130 to US$18,000.
This is a fee established last year by the Budget Reconciliation Act for foreigners who receive a deportation order, do not leave the US, and are subsequently detained for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to the authorities, these fines would serve to reimburse the costs of detaining and removing immigrants with deportation orders.
In turn, the Trump administration claims that this The measure seeks to encourage undocumented people to opt for self-deportation.
The proposal was published in the Federal Register, where it is explained that in September of last year ICE began to collect US$5 thousand for the fine established for fiscal year 2025.
In November, The immigration authorities increased the fee to US$5,130.
Now, ICE claims that the amount “is too low” to compensate for the agency’s actions.
“It is necessary to consider the broader costs of identify, detain, process, and remove such alien,” DHS states.
Finally, DHS established a period for public comments until June 22.
