With the arrival of the rainy season, the controlled landfill at kilometer 22 of the route to the Pacific will temporarily close again on some Saturdays for operational and maintenance work, reported the Authority for the Sustainable Management of the Amatitlán Basin and Lake (AMSA). This situation has been repeated in the last two years due to machinery problems and complications in the operation of the site.
The measure will be applied on Saturdays, May 23 and 30, as well as June 6 and 13. On those dates, the site will remain closed to the public while operational and technical tasks are carried out that seek to prevent inconveniences and guarantee adequate conditions for the final disposal of solid waste.
According to AMSA, these actions are part of a preventive and corrective plan focused on improving safety, efficiency and responsibility in waste management, in addition to prioritizing the protection of public health and the environment in the Lake Amatitlán basin.
However, this situation is repeated during the rainy season, as has happened in the last two years, when the lack of machinery and operational complications at the landfill caused temporary closures and limitations in the reception of waste.
The institution clarified that the landfill will continue to operate normally from Monday to Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., which is why it called on municipalities, collection companies and neighbors to coordinate in advance the garbage collection and transfer days during the temporary closure dates.
AMSA asked for the understanding and collaboration of the population, and indicated that these measures will allow us to strengthen the service and respond responsibly to the environmental and operational needs of the controlled landfill at kilometer 22, in Villa Nueva.
