The 36-year-old goalkeeper arrives on a one-year loan from Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica, a club where he made his professional debut in 2010. It will be his second stage with the Quetzaltecan team, after his time at the institution in 2013.
According to club sources, the hiring responds to the absence of the Uruguayan goalkeeper, Rubén Darío Silva, who suffered a rupture of his Achilles tendon at the end of April and continues in the recovery process.
Silva’s contract ends in December, so Xelajú opted to incorporate a goalkeeper with experience and immediate availability to face the season’s competitions.
Álvarez will not occupy a foreign position because he has Guatemalan nationality. In this way, coach Roberto Hernández will have one more option for the goal, along with Estuardo Sicán and Eduardo Chang.
Throughout his career, the goalkeeper has played more than 250 games for clubs in Central America.
One of his most notable cycles was with Cobán Imperial, where he participated in 109 games, received 131 goals and recorded 39 games without receiving an annotation. In addition, he was part of the team that won the 2022 Apertura Tournament.
During his recent stage at Saprissa he had little participation, a situation that favored his departure in search of continuity.
Xelajú is already working in the preseason with a view to the Apertura Tournament and the Central American Cup.
In Costa Rica, Álvarez has played for Saprissa, Belén Siglo XXI, Santos de Guápiles, Limón FC, Herediano, Pérez Zeledón, Universidad de Costa Rica, Cartaginés, Sporting San José and Juventud Escazuceña.
In Guatemala he has defended the colors of Aurora FC, Malacateco, Antigua GFC, Petapa, Cobán Imperial, Marquense and Xelajú MC.
