Fines of between Q20 thousand and Q40 thousand were imposed on two extra-urban transport buses involved in a multiple accident on Saturday, June 13 on the Inter-American route, reported the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (CIV).
The two extra-urban buses, as well as six light vehicles, were involved in a multiple accident at kilometer 45 of the Inter-American route on June 13, 2026.
As a result, rescuers treated more than 25 people and transferred 10 injured people to the National Hospital of Chimaltenango.
In this regard, the General Directorate of Transport (DGT) and the General Directorate of Road Protection and Safety (Provial), which are part of the CIV, reported that they imposed fines on the two extra-urban passenger transport units.
They announced that the units are identified with the license plates C-425BPZ and C-587BSH.
After verifications and data review carried out by DGT inspectors, fines were imposed for non-compliance with current regulations:
A remission was imposed on the unit with license plate C-425BPZ for three infractions, for a total of Q40,011.40:
- Sanction of Q5 thousand for not carrying the pilot’s registration
- Q15 thousand for not presenting the current insurance policy
- Q20 thousand 011.40 for not presenting the certificate of Speed Limiting System (SLV)
The unit with license plate C-587BSH was issued a referral for a violation:

The DGT and Provial recalled that the obligation to install and use The SLV is established in article 3 of Decree 45-2016 of Congress, which contains the Law for the Strengthening of Road Safety and its regulations, in addition to Government Agreement 38-2019, that regulates the requirements for the installation, operation and registration of this device in extra-urban passenger and cargo transport units.

These obligations are intended to strengthen road safetypromote responsible driving and contribute to the prevention of traffic events, the institutions added.
They also called on extra-urban transport companies and operators to comply with current legal provisions, such as the authorization of pilots, the validity of mandatory insurance and the correct installation and registration of the SLV.
Due to the magnitude of the accident, vehicular traffic was blocked in the area of the accident for several hours on Saturday.
