Man sentenced to 180 years in prison for the death of six people in an armed attack in Coatepeque

A man was sentenced to 180 years in prison for the death of six people in an armed attack that occurred on September 21, 2024 in an establishment located in zone 2, El Rosario neighborhood, of Coatepeque, Quetzaltenango, the Public Ministry (MP) reported this Monday, June 15.

The prosecution reported the conviction, but did not reveal the identity of the accused.

According to the investigation, the now convicted man caused the death of four men and two women with firearms. For these events he was sentenced by the Court of Criminal Sentencing, Narcoactivity and Crimes against the Environment of Coatepeque.

The conviction was obtained by the Coatepeque District Prosecutor’s Office, which presented various means of evidence to prove the criminal responsibility of the defendant in the events.

Identified victims

After the incident, the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) identified the six victims and established the causes of death.

Victims:

  • Maydelin Yamileth Pérez Pérez. Cause of death: gunshot wound and brain laceration.
  • Susan Lineth Sánchez Artiga. Cause of death: gunshot wound and brain laceration.
  • Carlos Francisco Valiente Paniagua. Cause of death: gunshot wound and brain laceration.
  • Marco Aníbal Gutiérrez Barillas. Cause of death: gunshot wound and brain laceration.
  • Alexander Martínez Alarcón. Cause of death: gunshot wound to the chest and cardiac laceration.
  • Santiago Eduardo López Velásquez. Cause of death: gunshot wound and brain laceration.

According to the information released by the authorities, the attack occurred inside an establishment located in the El Rosario neighborhood. After the investigation proceedings, the MP presented the case to the courts and obtained a conviction of 180 years in prison against the person responsible.

The authorities did not provide more details about the motive for the incident or the identity of the convicted person.
