Vegetables register increases of up to 40% due to the effects of rains and transportation

The rains of recent weeks and the costs associated with transportation continue to affect the pockets of consumers in the country’s markets.

Merchants consulted indicated that several vegetables have registered price increases due to weather conditions that affect agricultural production. Among the most affected products are potatoes, onions, carrots, beets and güisquil.

According to sellers, some foods have increased their price by up to 40% compared to previous weeks. The increases range between Q2 and Q6 per product, depending on supply and demand.

Merchants explain that the constant rains cause damage to crops, crop losses and difficulties in moving products to distribution centers, factors that end up being reflected in the final price for consumers.

Added to this is the cost of fuel, which influences the transportation of merchandise from production areas to markets. Farmers must invest more resources to maintain their crops and face adverse weather conditions.

On the other hand, sellers pointed out that seeds and beef maintain stable prices. In the case of meat, costs vary mainly depending on the quality of the product, with prices ranging between Q37 and Q43 per pound.

They assure that, as long as the rains and difficulties in agricultural production persist, they do not rule out that some products will continue to register variations in their prices during the coming weeks. Added to this is the heat wave warned by the Insivumeh.

Edna Ramírez, a merchant, said that most of the products purchased in the capital come from the highlands, so the cost of freight has increased considerably. He assured that, despite the increase in the cost of transportation, they try not to raise prices excessively.
