A shooting that occurred on the afternoon of June 18 in Times Squareone of the busiest areas of New York, caused scenes of panic among hundreds of people who were there.
The incident occurred shortly before at 4:00 p.m. at the intersection of 44th Street and Seventh Avenue, in Manhattan, and ended with a minor in police custody, as confirmed by the New York Police Department (NYPD).
According to preliminary information released by local authorities and media, two people ran towards the busy intersection, apparently pulled out firearms and fired several shots before trying to escape. The incident occurred a few hours after the massive celebration for the championship of the New York Knickswhich brought together thousands of people in the streets of the city.
Police reported that there were no injuries and that, at this time, it is unknown if the shots were directed at a specific person. The agents were able to arrest to one of the alleged suspects, a minor whose identity and age have not been revealed by the authorities. Additionally, a firearm was recovered at the scene.

Videos spread on social networks captured the moments after the detonations. In the images, dozens of people can be seen running to safety, while others seek refuge behind structures and street furniture when they hear at least four gunshots.
Another video recorded by surveillance cameras shows two people dressed in black entering the area before the detonations were heard. The recordings also show the rapid police response in a sector where agents usually remain on patrol due to the high influx of tourists.

Shooting occurs after Knicks celebration
The incident occurred shortly after the parade and the activities organized to celebrate the championship of the New York Knickswhich attracted thousands of fans to downtown Manhattan.
Authorities deployed approximately 10 thousand police officers to ensure security during the celebrations. Despite the extensive operation, the shooting generated alarm among those who remained in the area after the sporting events ended.

The New York Police are keeping an open investigation to determine what motivated the shooting and whether more people are involved. So far, authorities have not confirmed whether the incident is related to any previous conflict nor have they offered additional details about the detained minor.

The case occurs just days after another violent incident in Times Square, where a 17-year-old boy was injured by gunfire during the Knicks’ victory celebrations.
The authorities reiterated that they will continue to strengthen security in the areas with the highest concentration of people while the investigations into the case progress.
