What was initially reported as atraffic accident on San Juan roadzone 7 of the capital, led to a series of events that are now the subject of investigation by the authorities. The accident left a woman dead, two people arrested for manslaughter and a driver attacked by a motorist who was not directly involved in the collision.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 17 in front of the San Juan Shopping Center, where a triple collision was recorded in which a Mercedes-Benz car and two motorcycles were involved.
According to the police report, after the accident the driver of the car, identified as Heidi “R”, 23 years old, and the motorist Santiago “B”, 53, who were charged with the crime of manslaughter while investigations are carried out to establish responsibility for the incident.
As a result of the accident, rescue forces transported several injured people to different healthcare centers.
Santiago “B” was taken to Roosevelt Hospital along with a woman identified as Lucrecia Chavez, approximately 60 years old, who was traveling as a companion. According to the police report, the woman had multiple injuries and died shortly after entering the shock room of the care center.
The driver of the car was also injured and was taken to the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) 7-19 to receive medical attention.
Two other people traveling on a third motorcycle were affected, although they did not require transport to a hospital.
This Thursday, June 18, images have circulated on social networks showing how the vehicle involved in the accident makes an uncontrolled U-turn and hits several vehicles, but the authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of the videos.
The aggression that was recorded
In addition to the accident, A video spread on social networks captured a moment that generated outrage between users.
In the images you can see the driver of the car approaching a motorcyclist after the accident. According to preliminary versions, the woman was trying to talk or apologize for what happened when the man reacted violently and hit her on the head with a helmet.
After the impact, the driver fell onto a flowerbed located on the side of the road. The attacker left the scene while several people observed the scene.
The recording quickly went viral and raised questions about the motorcyclist’s actions.
The attacker was not involved in the accident
Amílcar Montejo, director of Communication at Emetra, confirmed that an altercation did occur after the accident, but clarified that the man who appears hitting the driver is not among the drivers involved in the collision.
As explained by the official, the information collected at the scene indicates that a collision between a car and a motorcycle first occurred. Later, when the driver tried to leave, she hit a tree, a traffic sign and another motorcycle.
Montejo assured that authorities are reviewing photographs and videos to identify the man who appears in the recording.
“We are looking for it in photos and videos of the accident and it is not part of the vehicular incident,” he said.
Damage to infrastructure and consigned vehicles
The National Civil Police consigned the vehicles involved for the corresponding proceedings.
The car had severe damage to the front and multiple scratches to its structure. One of the motorcycles was completely destroyed due to the impact, while a third suffered considerable damage to the rear.
In addition to the injuries to the people involved, the accident caused damage to road infrastructure, including a traffic signal and a tree located in the sector.
The authorities indicated that these damages are part of the file that will be sent to the corresponding jurisdictional bodies to determine responsibilities and establish repair costs.
Research in development
The National Civil Police maintains open investigations to clarify the exact sequence of events and determine criminal responsibilities arising from the accident that claimed the life of a woman.
At the same time, the authorities are seeking to identify the motorist who attacked the driver, since, according to preliminary information, his participation was limited to the altercation that occurred after the collision and not to the traffic event that caused the emergency.
